Hypertext

HyperText is a way to link and access information of various kinds as a web of nodes in which the user can browse at will. Potentially, HyperText provides a single user-interface to many large classes of stored information such as reports, notes, data-bases, computer documentation and on-line systems help.

WorldWideWeb: Proposal for a HyperText Project

Hypertext (meaning “extensible text”) is a form of written digtial media that references other immediately accessible content through hyperlinks. It is one of the fundamental methods of information sharing across the Internet.

By allowing non-linear and non-sequential reading, hypertext prompted an exploration into new ways of publishing written media. A particularly well known comparison is Jorge Luis Borges’ short story The Garden of Forking Paths.
